Social Studies 11 Wednesday, April 4
Today we hit the ground running by looking at Passchendaele and the homefront. The PMI and VIctims/Victors sheet was distributed and will be worked on tomorrow. Tuesday, April 3 Today we eased back into school by reviewing some of the battles we have discussed by watching some CPH videos after discussing the Facebook data scandal. Wednesday, March 14 Today we had a health survey and tomorrow we return to our regularly scheduled programming. Tuesday, March 13 Today we held our 1917 town hall in Montreal. Kudos to our candidates! Kudos to Deanna, Mr. Potato Potato, Mr. Baguette, Madam Fromage, and all other speakers. Monday, March 12 Today we had time to do some prep work for tomorrow's town hall meeting (in 1917 Montreal). You are to come ready to ask pointed questions and share your comments with our Conservative, Liberal and Independent candidates. Friday, March 9 Today we looked at the Second Battle of Ypres and the Somme. Essays were handed in and homework was given (Read pages 37-39 to complete your battle chart and read pages 49-51 for context/cause and consequence note-taking) Thursday, March 8 Today we had some more work time for upcoming assignments and we finished watching Royal Cousins at War. Wednesday, March 7 Today we had some notes on the home front (militarization) and then there was some time for work. Pages 32-34 and 45-48 were assigned and notes are to be taken in a cause and effect style. Tuesday, March 6 Today we watched part of a video on the psychology involved in the outbreak of WWI. We also had some notes on the MAINB components. Monday, March 5 Today we briefly went over the start of WWI - we will look at the causes in more depth when we watch the Royal Cousins video. A mnemonic was assigned for the MAINB causes of war (dues Monday March 12) and a minor project was assigned for March 16th. Friday, March 2 Today we had some time to work on our essay skeletons and we discussed official apologies for the Komagata Maru incident and the Chinese Head tax. Thursday, March 1 Today we went over criteria for our essays and collaboratively built an essay skeleton. The focus of this essay is on the quality of argument you make, particularly with the use of sources as evidence. The essay skeleton is due on Tuesday and the the essay is due on Friday, March 9th Wednesday, Feb 28 Today we continued our use of primary sources and selected our sources for in-depth examination. Tuesday, Feb 27 Today we began our history unit with a discussion of history as a narrative and with an examination of primary sources. Monday, Feb 26 Today we focused on Core Competencies. We crafted individual goals and then created goals for the whole class. Tomorrow we begin our focus on history and historical thinking skills. Friday, Feb 23 Pro-D Day Thursday, Feb 22 Test Day! Wednesday, Feb 21 Review Tuesday, Feb 20 No Test Tomorrow!! It is postponed a day. Thursday, Feb 8 Wow! My mind is blown! Today our class rocked the campaign trail and we do have a new government. The results from the referendum are also in and we will indeed be using BC-STV in future elections. Parliament will convene on Tuesday. Sleep well and know that you exceeded expectations. Wow! Wednesday, Feb 7 Today we had time to prep for our campaign and we looked at some election basics. Tomorrow we will have time for campaigning before we cast our ballots. Tuesday, Feb 6 Today we had time to prep for our campaign. Tomorrow we will have some time to finish our campaign and then will cover voting, First-past-the-post and proportional representation. Your homework is to read pp 313-317 as background information. Mnemonics are due on Thursday! Monday, Feb 5 Today we got farther in the electoral process. We completed nomination and we have all of our candidates for our major parties. We had time to develop our platforms and prepare for campaigning. Tomorrow will also be a chance to prepare our campaigns and on Wednesday we vote! Pages 304- -311 were assigned as background reading. Mnemonics are due on Thursday. Your assignment package should include your mnemonic, your political compass screenshot and your 'design a society' paragraph. Friday, Feb 2 Today we got together with our political allies and formed federal political parties. We watched and analyzed some political advertising, which will also serve as some inspiration as we plan out our election campaign. Dissolution of the House of Commons has already happened, enumeration is complete and on Monday we will nominate our candidates in riding 123. Homework is to come to class with 2-3 policies that you want your party to include in your platform. These should be consistent with the actual federal parties' positions. Thursday, Feb 1 Today we looked at ideologies and the ideology mnemonic was given out today. It is due Feb 8th and will be handed in with your written piece on your society design, your political compass and written explanation of your position on the political spectrum. Wednesday, January 31 Today we began our government unit by deciding how we would design our ideal society before plotting to see where it would land in terms of freedoms and government supports. Then we had some notes on levels of government, and played a neat exercise to see which responsibilities each level of government has. We ended with the political spectrum quiz. Tomorrow we will discuss ideologies. Tuesday, January 30 Today we discussed identity in general, explored our individual identities and discussed general Canadian identity. We watch an 'over the top' video that promoted a specific view of Canadian identity and generally agreed that it did not fit with how we had collectively described Canadian identity. Homework was to complete the PATH for Friday. A short paragraph on Canadian identity was handed in. Monday January 29 We met for the first time and began our work looking into Canadian identity. This theme will be our guide throughout the course. |

Today we hit the ground running by reviewing the final section of language notes and watching a video on language development. The language development sheet is due on Friday. Tuesday, April 3 Today we eased back into school by discussing the ape language controversy. Wednesday, March 14 Today we had a health survey and tomorrow we return to our regularly scheduled programming. Tuesday, March 13 Today we looked at schedules in operant conditioning and Bandura's social cognitive learning theory. We also went over the spitting scenario. Monday, March 12 Today we looked at classical and operant conditioning. We had the chance to try shaping simple behaviours - congratulations on your successes - and a classical conditioning worksheet was handed out (due Wednesday). Friday, March 9 Today we looked at thinking and problem solving. Thursday, March 8 Today we finished off looking at memory (specifically memory strategies, why we forget and memory errors). Wednesday, March 7 Today we had a look at models of memory and some discussion of memory strategies. Tuesday, March 6 Today we had our developmental psychology test. Monday, March 5 Today we looked at Erikson's theory and Alzheimer's disease. Test tomorrow - review sheet posted in the class section. Friday, March 2 Today we had our Nature vs. Nurture debates. Congratulations to everyone who showed up ready to debate. Thursday, March 1 Today we examined the moral theories of Lawrence Kholberg and Carol Gilligan and discussed the Heinz dilemma. Wednesday, Feb 28 Today we examined Piaget and Vygotsky's theories and watched a video showing how research can examine early development. A worksheet was handed out. Tuesday, Feb 27 We continued our look at attachment and also looked at temperament (and how they influence each other) we had an attachment challenge and did a parenting style questionnaire. Monday, Feb 26 Today we began looking more in depth at development and we looked at attachment styles. Tomorrow we will continue this and also expand to include discussion of temperament. Pro-D Day Thursday, Feb 22 Today we had time to work on our Nature versus Nurture debates. Debates are set to happen on Thursday, March 1st. Wednesday, Feb 21 Today we began our Nature vs Nurture section of the Developmental psychology unit. Debate partnerships were established with the debate set to take place next Thursday. Two groups will debate each other and must be prepared for either sided of the issue. If you were absent, you will need to see Ms Vaessen to get set up. Monday, Feb 19 Today we looked at the neuroscience of addiction and discussed this in light of policy. We also had our flowerswatter competition and Team Octopi won! Friday, Feb 16 Today we looked at some very cool research such as split brain research, growing brains in petri dishes and brain computer interfaces, Thursday, Feb 15 Today we looked at the endocrine system, with a focus on how it interacts with the nervous system, and we looked at brain research techniques. Wednesday Feb 14 Today Ms. Vaessen was away but we watch TED talks and discussed the applications of the topics. Tuesday Feb 13 Today Ms. Vaessen we looked at the structures of the brain and their associated functions. Thursday, Feb 8 Today we looked at the action potential, neurotransmitters and neuroplasticity. A neurotransmitter worksheet was handed out. Homework is to sleep and be prepared to discuss government drug policies on Tuesday when we discuss addiction and changes in the brain. Wednesday, Feb 7 We started our bio-psyc starts unit by looking at neurons and how the subjective experience of living in the world can drastically change when the structure of your brain is altered. Test Review Sheet Posted!!! Tuesday, Feb 6 We had our test. Bio-psyc starts tomorrow! Monday, Feb 5 Today we looked at statistics and had an opportunity to read and assess scenarios. Remember that the scenarios are full of methodological and/or ethical issues. You will face one similar scenario on tomorrow's test. Sleep well. Friday, Feb 2 Today we looked at research design and ethics through reading and discussing two research studies. Our test is now on Tuesday not Monday.It includes a rubric to show how it would be marked. Thursday, Feb 1 Today we looked at research design and ethics. We read and discussed the Robber's Cave experiment. The hypothetical research design assignment was given. It is due Feb 8th-13th. An example will be posted on the class page. Wednesday, January 31 Today we finished off looking at branches/avenues within psychology and moved on to research methodologies. We did a concept check for independent, dependent and confounding variables. Tuesday, January 30 Today we had a great discussion of the strengths we bring to the classroom and how this influences the social dynamics. We also began some notes on the historical foundations of psychology and began our PATHs (which are due on Friday). Monday January 29 We met for the first time together. We examined ourselves and our moral thinking. |
